10 Most Emotional Community Episodes

3. Mixology Certification

Community Troy
NBC

Mixology Certification is a love letter to one of Community's best characters, Troy Barnes. It takes place on the day before what Troy believes to be his 20th birthday. However, the study group learn that Troy is actually a year older than he thought, and Jeff and Britta scramble to throw him a 21st birthday party. They squabble over what bar to take Troy to, eventually deciding on a place called the Ballroom.

However, like most 21st birthday parties, Troy's goes horribly wrong. Jeff and Britta fight over what is essentially nothing, Annie gets lost in character as the woman whose ID she is using to enter the bar, Abed gets a drink tossed in his face, Shirley is embarrassed by her past alcoholism, and a wheelchair bound Pierce can't even get past the door.

However, despite everything, Troy is able to turn it around. He talks some sense into Jeff and Britta, and reminds Annie why she's awesome after a brief identity crisis. After seeing Troy worry he's not as "grown up" as Jeff and Britta, watching him step up as the only adult in the room is really satisfying.

Mixology Certification, one of the most down to Earth episodes of Community, contains lots of emotional beats. There's something about the way director Jay Chandrasekhar frames certain shots, like Troy sitting alone over his midnight seven and seven, Shirley angrily leaving the bar and reluctantly taking Pierce with her, and Troy standing with Annie as he gives her a pep talk, which just hits you right in the feels. If you love Troy, you'll feel emotional over Mixology Certification.
