Last year's samurai-themed video game Ghost of Tsushima became the PS4's fastest-selling original exclusive title in history, selling more than 6.5 million copies since its launch last July.

And so it's little surprise that such a commercially successful and inherently cinematic new IP has Hollywood keen to adapt it into a film, which was just recently confirmed, with John Wick trilogy director Chad Stahelski set to take the helm.

The game casts player as samurai Jin Sakai, who fights to protect Tsushima Island during the first Mongol invasion of Japan.

It will mark the second movie collaboration between Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, after the upcoming, Tom Holland-starring Uncharted film.

With developers Sucker Punch also involved as executive producers, this hands-on approach should theoretically ensure a more faithful and cohesive end product than in other video game movies.

No word yet on who will write the film or casting, though Jin Sakai actor Daisuke Tsuji has enthusiastically thrown his hat in the ring to reprise his role, and has a passionate fan campaign behind him already.

Either way, the involvement of Stahelski, who has proven himself an extremely confident action director with the John Wick films, feels like an inspired fit for a video game adaptation where slick, stylish set-pieces comprise the core appeal.
