The Wire's co-creator David Simon is currently prepping his next project with HBO, an adaptation of investigative journalist Justin Fenton's recently released book "We Own This City: A True Story of Crime, Cops and Corruption."

Simon will team with his regular collaborator George Pelecanos to write the Baltimore-centric miniseries, which despite its setting and counting numerous The Wire writers among its staff, won't in any way be a spin-off from the acclaimed crime drama series.

Fenton's book is set in 2015 and covers the Baltimore protests and riots following the contentious murder of 25-year-old Black man Freddie Gray in police custody, which gives rise to a far more complex web of corruption within Baltimore's police department.

Given Simon's meticulous, journalistic eye for detail, there's no reason to expect anything less than brilliance from this, and following last year's Black Lives Matter protests, it couldn't be more timely.
