It may feel like George R.R. Martin is attached to more projects than anyone can conceivably keep count of, but perhaps the most tantalising of his announced upcoming works is an adaptation of his 1979 novelette "Sandkings."

The 23-page Hugo Award-winning work is set within the same "Thousand Worlds" universe as several of Martin's other stories, and follows a wealthy playboy named Simon Kress, who on the planet Baldur gets more than he bargained for when he purchases some of the titular creatures.

Sandkings has previously been adapted into a 1995 episode of The Outer Limits, but is now being made into a Netflix film to be directed by Gore Verbinski (A Cure for Wellness), who certainly seems like a solid fit both tonally and stylistically.

Scripting duties will meanwhile be handled by Dennis Kelly (Utopia). Given Netflix's typically permissive relationship with their filmmakers, hopefully Verbinski will be allowed to fully harness the inspired nuttiness of Martin's source material.
