10 Most Groundbreaking TV Shows Of The '90s

Revolutionary is a word that is thrown about so much these days that we can often forget what it means, but it's really the only word that can be used to describe David Lynch's masterpiece Twin Peaks. The hit series arrived on our screens all the way back in 1991, and from the day it aired, television has been a completely different place.

Despite its murder-centric premise, Twin Peaks was far from your average police procedural. The unique blend of realism and supernatural made Twin Peaks an unusual hybrid that was certainly the first of its kind, and such a concept would never have worked had it not been for the genius that is David Lynch. The show was way ahead of its time, and was unapologetically weird, and its resistance to conform to the expected television conventions made it an instant classic. In fact, many of the show's key attributes, such as the spooky town or the eccentric investigator have been incorporated into many series' later down the line, including Stranger Things and Wayward Pines.

Twin Peaks was recently revived for an 18-part third season and, as Lynch had complete creative control this time round, it was even weirder than its predecessor. Even 25 years on, and Twin Peaks is still revolutionising television.
