10 Most Hate-Worthy Villains From Animated TV Shows

8. Gendo Ikari - Neon Genesis Evangelion

In hindsight, Neon Genesis is a rather difficult show to analyze retrospectively. It had an amazing narrative, stunning visuals, and thrilling action, before ultimately crashing to a divisive end; both in terms of story and the animation work.

But of course now we know about the difficulties surrounding the show’s final days. The financial issues with the network, and more importantly the creator’s mental health struggles; a lot of which were actually reflected in the latter elements of the storyline. In many ways, this show’s main villains are depression, anxiety and PTSD.

Still though, Gendo Ikari is an absolutely terrible person who, at least in the original ending, effectively destroyed the world for his own vision of perfection. In a world that had been devastated by an alleged meteorite event, the survivors must live in fear of giant robotic beings named after biblical angels who appeared shortly afterward.

Gendo so happened to lead one of the organizations in charge of fighting Angels. His true plan was something far more sinister. He used his accumulated power and influence to construct a system that would pull all human consciousness into a singularity. According to him, here everyone’s thoughts would be at ease; his idea of salvation.

The man was so far gone that he truly believed it was his right to fundamentally alter the meaning of existence just so he could fulfil his and his wife’s idea of a utopia.
