10 Most Hated BoJack Horseman Characters

BoJack Horseman wasn't the show's only piece of sh*t.

Over the years, the BoJack Horseman cast of characters grew like in any TV show, and while some, like Todd and Princess Carolyn were universally loved, others were not.

Charlotte once described L.A as a tar pit, and though she later went back on her original sentiment, going on to say that the individual person is the tar pit rather than the town itself, she had a point to begin with. Hollywoo, and the other places around the world explored by BoJack Horseman, were full of these tar pits.

Most of the characters that became hated by BoJack fans were supposed to be hated. They were written in such a way that they were an antagonist, with some going so far as being sexual predators, murderers, or the worst parents in the entire world.

Some slowly developed and earned the hatred of audiences over the course of the entire six season run, and some were able to incite such feelings in just one or two episodes. All however, solidified their status as the kind of tar pit Charlotte spoke about, but for very different reasons.

10. Neal McBeal

Bojack Horseman
Netflix

There was once a time when the biggest problem in BoJack's life was surrounding the ownership of some muffins. The second ever episode of the show saw the titular star embroiled in a battle trying to protect his own image. Of course, he made things worse for himself and gave the media the ammo to label him as someone who hated America’s war heroes, but the whole started with some muffins.

BoJack saw a pack of muffins in the grocery store and picked them up, only to be confronted by Neal McBeal the Navy Seal who claimed they were his. They got into an argument about dibs, and BoJack eventually got so irritated that he brought the muffins, the last pack on the shelf, and ate all 12 on the way home despite not actually wanting them.

This may have been a dick move by BoJack, as he is wont to do on occasion, but did this really need to be blown to the proportion that it was? Seriously, who goes to the media over someone taking the muffins they wanted from the store? Neal McBeal, that’s who.

BoJack didn’t need to antagonize him, but the conversation was never about anyone’s views on the military. Just because Neal McBeal was a Navy Seal doesn’t mean he wasn’t a jerk, and this is one of the few times that BoJack was actually hard done by in the series.

9. Abe D'Catfish

Bojack Horseman
Netflix

Under the direction of Kelsey, even in spite of unwanted interference from the studio, the making of Secretariat was at least bearable for BoJack. This all changed when she was fired however, and replaced with Abe.

While Kelsey was passionate, and actually cared about her work, Abe was just happy to put in as little as possible to make the studio happy and make money. He didn’t care about the movie, he just wanted to do his job and get his paycheck. Until he had a misunderstanding with BoJack.

His star actor accidentally insulted him and the movie they were making, and so he spent the remainder of their time together making BoJack’s life hell. The plan was for the star to wrap up and go do a big play in New York, something that would have made him happy, but Abe wouldn’t let him.

Instead, he demanded reshoot after reshoot, deliberately to keep BoJack away from New York and potential happiness. Though not exclusively, this played a large part in driving him out of LA and to his fateful few months in New Mexico.

8. Jeramiah Whitewhale

Bojack Horseman
Netflix

Throughout the series, Diane found herself going up against several scumbags. Whether this was through her journalism, coincidence, or her marriage, if there was someone doing something morally wrong, on more than one occasion she tried to stop them.

This was the case with Jeremiah Whitewhale. The business tycoon and CEO of the monster conglomerate that was named for his family had no problem running smaller businesses into the ground and acquiring others all in the name of protecting his brand. At a certain point however, he stopped caring about any potential consequences.

Even with Guy filming him for Diane’s final Girl Croosh video, Whitewhale admitted to murdering one of his employees. The reason? He was taking too many bathroom breaks and was encouraging others to do the same. This kind of ruthlessness and disregard for anyone getting in the way of his fortune was something he could freely admit to, as the law had recently changed to make murder legal if you were rich.

He was the embodiment of the arrogant, self-obsessed upper class that were killing many lives in the working class without so much as a second thought for anything but his own money.

7. Angela Diaz

Bojack Horseman
Netflix

The first truly awful thing that BoJack Horseman did was betray his best friend Herb. He was given an ultimatum, in that he could either let the creator of ‘Horsin’ Around’ get fired with no consequences for himself, or he could try to defend Herb and see the whole show go under.

This choice was given to him by Angela Diaz. She manipulated him into believing he had no power in the matter, even though she could never have got rid of BoJack. If he wanted to stick up for Herb he could have, and she couldn’t have done anything about it.

It was Angela Diaz that first corrupted the mind of BoJack Horseman, and she never had a single moment of remorse for her actions. She was concerned with her own interests, no matter what it did to anyone else.

She was a liar and a manipulator, but what is even worse is the reason she wanted to fire Herb in the first place. As she was trying to sell the show to Disney, she believed her director’s recently outed homosexuality would be damaging to their brand and any possible sale, so she cut ties with him immediately.

6. Mr. Peanutbutter

Bojack Horseman
Netflix

Mr. Peanutbutter is a strange character, because his whole schtick is that everyone loves him. However, this is ironically what makes so many people hate him. He has had one of the easiest lives in the history of Hollywoo, and was rarely faced with any hardships or adversity, but he didn’t appreciate it.

He simply assumed that life was this easy for everyone, even when living with a wife who suffered with crippling anxiety and depression. He never gave a thought for anyone else, or considered their feelings, just as long as he and the ‘lovable’ reputation he had built up for himself remained intact.

Sometimes it wasn’t even his fault, but everything just worked out for him without even trying. He just walked around and would get offered a job, and boasted about writing a shallow autobiography with ease while Diane struggled with writing something real.

Arguably the worst thing he did, aside from the years of indirect emotional abuse of Diane, was how he treated Pickles. He cheated on her with Diane, and when he tried to tell her, he was so worried about not being viewed as a ‘good dog’ anymore he actually proposed to her instead. As long as he was okay, Mr. Peanutbutter rarely worried about anyone else.

5. Hank Hippopopalous

Bojack Horseman
Netflix

Everybody loves Uncle Hanky. He was an incredibly popular TV personality who was able to stay relevant for decades thanks to his charm and big personality. However, in something of a commentary on a certain type of character in Hollywood, Hank was not what he seemed on the outside.

Eight of his former assistants had all accused Hank of the same thing in the past, though he was never called out on it. He was kept protected because of his star power, and while it was never fully specified exactly what he had been accused of, it was strongly hinted that it was sexual assault.

Hank had the connections he needed, and the ability to make money for a lot of people with his face on the TV that he could basically get away with anything. Even when Diane tried to run an expose through Manatee Fair, she was shut down because the magazine’s owners also profited off Hank’s show, ‘Hey, I Think You Can Dance.’

The TV personality ruined the lives of eight women, he threated Diane to leave him alone, and he had absolutely no comeuppance. When he was finally “confronted” about the accusations on TV, he simply said he didn’t do it, and that was enough for the media to bury the entire thing.

4. Vance Waggoner

Bojack Horseman
Netflix

The long, long, long list of horrendous and despicable things that Vance Waggoner did is far too long to contain in this single list entry. He was racist, sexist, threatened to murder his own 14 year old daughter, he choked his wife, and sexted a 12 year old to name a few, and yet he still kept getting forgiven by Hollywoo.

The acts were abhorrent in themselves, but it was what Vance represented that made him so hated. He was a man, and so could do essentially anything he wanted, come out with a half-arsed apology, and go on to his next horrible thing before apologizing again.

The bar was set embarrassingly low. When he was offered a role in Philbert, other agents got word and he suddenly started to get more job offers than ever before. His past was just forgotten about like he wasn’t the most disgusting human being on the planet.

Every time he was forgiven, every time he pretended to be sorry and made up an excuse for doing what he did, he and his problematic lifestyle and character were normalized and legitimized.

3. Beatrice Horseman

Bojack Horseman
Netflix

As a mother, Beatrice Horseman can be summed up by one observation made by BoJack at her funeral. When he got a free churro from a Jack in the Box because his mom died, the stranger behind the counter who gave it to him showed him more compassion than his mother ever did.

After ditching the life her father had planned out for her, stealing away to California with Butterscotch, things soon soured. She gave birth to BoJack and immediately resented him. She blamed him for ruining her body and her life, punished him for being alive, and verbally and emotionally abused him from childhood through to his adult life.

When BoJack was young, Beatrice put immense pressure on her son, demanding he become something great to make up for all the damage he had done. The damage to which she referred was nothing more than being born. No matter what BoJack achieved however, would never have been enough for her.

If you were really trying to find some manner of redeeming factor for Beatrice, you could look to her own parents. Just like BoJack, she was brought up in a chaotic household, and was told never to love anything like her mother loved Beatrice's brother, Crackerjack. Beatrice took that to heart, and never showed BoJack anything even close to resembling love. Did either of them ever stand any chance of being normal with these childhoods?

2. Butterscotch Horseman

Bojack Horseman
Netflix

While Beatrice at least had the excuse of seeing her own mother fall into insanity in front her very eyes, Butterscotch Horseman was just invariably awful. Not only did he physically and verbally abuse his wife, he did it in front of his young son with no regard for what impression this would give him.

He then went on to do the same for BoJack, giving him absolutely no chance in later life to respect or treat women properly, or to be a well rounded, healthy person.

Butterscotch genuinely thought he was hard done by in life, having to accept a high paying job with Beatrice’s family instead of toiling in the canning factory. He hated being kept up by BoJack’s screams as a baby, blaming Beatrice for not shutting him up, and he ultimately cheated on his wife when he got Henrietta the maid pregnant with Hollyhock.

To sum up BoJack’s father in one phrase, there would be no better than toxic masculinity. He thought that by picking BoJack up from soccer practice once his son would get confused and warped ideas about gender roles, and when one newspaper didn’t like his novel, he challenged anyone else who didn’t like it to a duel. This was the key male role model BoJack had to look up to, so it’s no wonder he turned out as damaged as he did.

1. BoJack Horseman

Bojack Horseman
Netflix

There aren’t many TV shows in which the titular character, who was supposed to be the protagonist, is not only hated by the audience, but is the MOST hated in the entire series. None but BoJack Horseman, and that is part of the show’s dark magic.

He was an incredibly damaged character, but the things he did throughout the run of the series were unforgivable. Diane believed that no one was inherently good or bad, but BoJack proved over six seasons that he was a bad person, even in spite of the positive change he tried to make after going to rehab.

He betrayed Herb and didn’t call him for 20 years, he was responsible for Sarah-Lynn’s death, he was constantly a terrible, self-centered friend that never gave a damn about anyone else, he almost killed Gina, the list goes on and on.

You can say that he was damaged from the beginning thanks to the influence of Beatrice and Butterscotch, but they didn’t make him kill Sarah-Lynn. He did that on his own. He said it himself best and it’s hard to argue against it, he is a stupid piece of sh*t.
