As a mother, Beatrice Horseman can be summed up by one observation made by BoJack at her funeral. When he got a free churro from a Jack in the Box because his mom died, the stranger behind the counter who gave it to him showed him more compassion than his mother ever did.

After ditching the life her father had planned out for her, stealing away to California with Butterscotch, things soon soured. She gave birth to BoJack and immediately resented him. She blamed him for ruining her body and her life, punished him for being alive, and verbally and emotionally abused him from childhood through to his adult life.

When BoJack was young, Beatrice put immense pressure on her son, demanding he become something great to make up for all the damage he had done. The damage to which she referred was nothing more than being born. No matter what BoJack achieved however, would never have been enough for her.

If you were really trying to find some manner of redeeming factor for Beatrice, you could look to her own parents. Just like BoJack, she was brought up in a chaotic household, and was told never to love anything like her mother loved Beatrice's brother, Crackerjack.
