Astonishingly, one companion stands head and shoulders above all the rest with Doctor Who fandom. Not as the favourite, but as the most despised in history - even more so than Mel. Thats mathematical prodigy from world in the parallel universe of E-Space, Adric stows away on board the TARDIS in the 4th Doctors serial, Full Circle, becoming a companion for a gratingly-long two years. Adric is a teenage know-it-all, a boy with a pathological need to know everything about everything. Always badgering the Doctor or his fellow companions, Adrics abrasive personality and arrogant mannerisms would set teeth on edge the entire time that he appeared on the show. He suffered in comparison with those companions, too Romana and K9 were two of the most interesting and popular in the shows history, and when they left, Nyssa and Tegan would join the crew. Tegan in particular would prove to be the longest running companion in the shows history, a loudmouthed Australian with an assertive personality and a heart of gold, and she and Adric did not see eye to eye for quite some time. Adric would prove so unpopular that the decision to actually kill the character, the first time a companion had ever died on the show, was met with street parties and the declaration of a public holiday.* He wasnt the first companion to die thats Katarina, the Trojan slave who didnt even know what a key was, and died after only a few episodes, still not understanding that the Doctor wasnt a god and the TARDIS not a temple. Killed failing to prevent a spacecraft crashlanding on Earth while battling the Cybermen, Adrics death was supposed to be lent poignancy by the fact that it was predestined: the crash was the extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs. Unfortunately, the character was so universally disliked that the majority of viewers couldnt have cared less. * This may or may not be literally true, but it should have been. Whos the character youve hated most, watching Doctor Who? Do you think they belong on this list instead of one of our selections? Tell us all about it in the comments!
