4. Perpugilliam €œPeri€ Brown

€because Planet Of Fire introduced us to the Doctor€™s next companion, Peri. A spoiled and reasonably dumb rich kid and college student, Peri spent most of her time asking very silly questions, screaming and being kidnapped, and wearing revealing clothing, the producers having brought her on board to add sex appeal to the show. What made the character even more annoying was that the decision had been made to make Peri American. Now, not as many people as you€™d think actually suspected at the time that actress Nicola Bryant was in fact English€ in the mid-eighties, not as much American television was broadcast on the United Kingdom€™s four television channels, and you could get away with a lot more. Bryant was also asked to retain her fake accent throughout filming and at all public appearances to maintain verisimilitude with the audience. No, the reason for the objections wasn€™t because viewers thought that Peri was fake, but rather that they thought she was real. The very English Doctor Who didn€™t need an American coming into it, messing things up. Introduced a month before the end of Peter Davison€™s run as the Doctor, the despised Peri also had the misfortune to be the cause of the 5th Doctor€™s regeneration, as the two were poisoned during the events of The Caves Of Androzani and there remained only enough antidote for one. The very popular young 5th Doctor would then transform into the most-disliked Doctor in the show€™s history, while Peri herself would bow out in peculiar fashion a year or so later, with a very significant death scene that was later revealed to be faked, her actual departure occurring off-screen. And all without ever revealing to an uninterested audience where in all the universe a girl gets given a name like €˜Perpugilliam€™. Speaking of the 6th Doctor€
