10 Most Hated Star Trek Voyager Episodes
9. Elogium Season 2, Episode 4
When space-dwelling creatures attack the Voyager, their electrophoretic field causes Kes to fall into a premature state of the elogium, her once in a lifetime period of fertilization, giving her and Neelix 50 hours to decide whether they are ready to be parents.
First of all, the premise is illogical since the Ocampa race would decrease by half every generation if women could only give birth once, so there is no way they could have developed into the advanced civilization depicted in the show. A bigger issue is that we are not given enough reason to care about Kes and Neelix's dilemma as their conversations, about whether they are prepared enough for the responsibility of having a baby, are a standard topic we have heard multiple times before.
To make matters worse, after the aliens are repelled, their bizarre aura stops affecting the ship causing Kes’s elogium to go away and somehow not count meaning she can have another one in the future. It’s a cop-out ending that completely goes against the rules established at the beginning making everything that happened feel pointless.
Meanwhile, a laugh-inducing subplot concerns a bunch of space protozoa that are sexually attracted to the ship, something that is immediately obvious yet which takes the crew forever to figure out. They thus have to find a way to, uhhm, lower Voyager's sex appeal so the aliens will leave them alone. This silly narrative, combined with Kes and Nelix's aforementioned domestic drama, makes Elogium an experience that hopefully, doesn't occur twice.
