10 Most Heartbreaking Futurama Moments
7. The Late Phillip J. Fry
Fry and Leela stories always pack the biggest emotional hit of the Futurama cast, especially when tragedy and fate combines to separate them.
Much like Meanwhile, the plot of The Late Phillip J. Fry features time travel heavily. In it, Fry records a birthday message for Leela apologising that he'll be a few minutes late for their date because the professor wants him to test his time machine. Predictably, the professor screws up and he and Fry, along with Bender, go spiralling forward in time. Thanks to a tragedy at a party Fry promised not to go to on the same night, Leela and the rest of the crew assume the three of them are dead.
It's not until years later when the time vortex spits out Fry's card that Leela learns the truth, and she's heartbroken all over again. She's been angry all these years for nothing, and now the wound is fresh once more.
Thankfully, she finds catharsis. By going to the Cavern On The Scream (like the Green, geddit?), Leela leaves a message for Fry in the stalagmites for him to read when he finally makes their date.
