10 Most Heartbreaking Futurama Moments

8. Inspector Five

Old Fry And Leela Futurama
Comedy Central

We've seen alternating versions of Bender's origin through the years, mostly as a cutaway gag. However, when they dug deep into the backstory, the laughs were replaced with surprisingly tender emotions.

Bender discovers he was built without an immortality drive, and sets out to take revenge on the human who certified him, Inspector Five. However, he knows he will get nowhere in the twisted, complicated world of bureaucracy, so drags Hermes along with him. Despite constantly insulting Hermes and his profession, the pair make a good team, eventually tracking down Inspector Five's location; Bender's home city of Tijuana.

Once they get to the hut though, Inspector Five is nowhere to be found. He's long gone, with the hut abandoned and falling into ruin. Before they can search further, Mom's killbots track them down. Mom has also just found out about Bender's missing immortality drive and doesn't like a faulty bending unit running around, you see.

Hermes saves Bender from the attack, and before the house completely crumbles, logs on to Inspector Number Five's computer and updates Bender's file to fool Mom. How could Hermes log on? Turns out he was Inspector Five all along, and couldn't bring himself to terminate baby Bender.
