10 Most Important Modern LGBT+ TV Characters
7. Nomi Marks - Sense8
The entirety of Sense8 was a groundbreaking phenomenon in the LGBT+ community, but unfortunately its greatest asset was also its fatal flaw. Sense8 was a trailblazer of a show, opening the door for other heavily queer, mainstream TV shows to become beacons of inclusivity.
However, as one of the first of its kind, it struggled to pick up an audience. Being so obviously queer, it seemed to alienate some of its potential viewer-base, and it was given an untimely cancellation.
However, in just 24 episodes it still became a major piece of modern LGBT+ culture, no more so than with the character of Nomi Marks, played by Jamie Clayton.
Her character is transgender, played by a trans actress (and the voice of Jien Garson, Mass Effect’s canonically trans character). Like Bill Potts, her gender identity is largely just there. Sense8 places much more importance on her relationship with Amanita, her hacking skills and her political stances than they do her gender identity.
There is another character later on who delves into the struggles transgender people face throughout their lives, but it’s refreshing that Nomi didn’t have to.
