10 Most Important Modern LGBT+ TV Characters
6. Mac - It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia
Mac is a very different kind of important.
A lot of the shows here have a typically inclusive message away from the LGBT+ character here, and are generally preaching to the choir in some ways. With the exception of Billions, which doesn’t pull in a massive draw, It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia is in a bit of a unique spot.
In short, homophobes likely wouldn’t watch Doctor Who, as even without Bill it’s a show with a history of pushing the idea of tolerance and inclusivity. They certainly aren’t going to watch Sense8 either.
These shows might normalise LGBT+ people and show their perspective to the ‘floating voters’ of society, but they don’t necessarily reach the people entrenched in ignorant views.
That’s why Mac is so important. It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia features some of the biggest scumbags on TV, and they pull no punches no matter what the topic is.
Prior to coming out, he’s the butt of gay jokes but it never feels like homophobic punching down; instead it’s the same mean spirited character jokes everyone gets to knock them off their perch.
When he finally comes out (in true Mac style, to win a scratch card), the Gang accepts him without question.
