10 Most Inappropriate Moments In Star Trek: Deep Space Nine
8. Onaya Feeding On Jake's Life Force
After the runaway success of "The Visitor", Deep Space Nine's producers sought to revisit the topic of Jake Sisko's creativity. The resulting episode, "The Muse", explores why so many of our favourite artists implode at a young age. Drugs? Alcohol? Not even close. Space vampires, that's why.
When Jake meets a charming older woman who strokes his ego and promises to help him overcome a bad case of writer's block, he agrees to visit her quarters that night. It's an aggressive first date, to say the least. Onaya encourages Jake to write and begins stimulating his brain while draining his life force. As you do. Their bizarre, parasitic relationship develops from there. Jake writes; Onaya feeds, but at least they've got each other.
Although Jake's ideas come thick and fast, his sessions with Onaya take a physical toll on his health. Captain Sisko intervenes to save Jake's life and end his relationship with Onaya, but for audiences everywhere, the damage is done.
For starters, the gaping age difference between Jake and Onaya is nothing short of disturbing. After all, we're led to believe she's thousands of years old. Yet for all the awkwardness of Onaya and Jake's mentor-mentee relationship, their pseudo-sexual moments together are what push "The Muse" over the top.
Watching Onaya help herself to another serving at Jake's energy buffet while he writes the great Federation novel is just gross. Plain and simple. Let's hope his next visit to a date's quarters doesn't involve pen and paper.
