10 Most Infamous SNL Musical Guests

2. Red Hot Chili Peppers

It's not out of the question for some acts to not really be on their A-game when it comes time to perform. For as much as some artists put their heart and soul into every performance, sometimes it gets a bit dicey when a band takes the stage on SNL, either because of band tension or not being fully rehearsed. In the case of the Red Hot Chili Peppers though, it felt like every single thing came to a head once the cameras started rolling.

Coming off the instant success of Blood Sugar Sex Magik, John Frusciante was starting to get far more uncomfortable with fame than anyone else, often retreating to the side of the stage during the live show. By the time the Peppers were supposed to start playing Under the Bridge, John fell apart in front of the audience. As Anthony Kiedis described it, John started to experiment with the tune much like they would in rehearsal, leaving him to sing in what he thought was the right place for the tune.

While most acts can get over a performance like this, the end was just beginning for the Peppers, as Frusciante would quit the band shortly thereafter during a show in Japan. Fame can be an attractive thing, but shows like this prove it came be just as destructive as well.
