10 Most Infamous SNL Musical Guests
1. Ashlee Simpson
Having a pop-rock starlet on SNL should always be a bit of an easy thing to pull off. Considering that most of these acts are inoffensive enough and don't really have the traditional rock star demands just yet, all you need to do is sit back and let the music do its thing. That is...as long as it's the right music.
After Ashlee Simpson started making waves on the pop scene with the track Pieces of Me, her performance on SNL was supposed to be the tip that she needed to become a heavy hitter in the scene. Instead, the world was treated to one of the most glaring errors in live television history, when Simpson's voice didn't match up with the song they were actually playing. Intending to lip sync her performance, the sound engineers had screwed up and started playing the backing track of another song, leaving Simpson to be caught faking her performance until things eventually bottomed out.
While she tried to play it off and apologize at the end of the show, this turned into one of the most devastating blows to Simpson's career, as people came out left and right accusing her of faking every single note she sang. For as much as she might like to distance herself from this incident these days, it takes a special brand of awful performance to lose all of your creative goodwill like this.
