This one is properly mad. The theory put forward by /darthstupidious/ says that Leonard is actually Jeff from the future sent back by Abed. For what purpose? Nobody knows. Though it does explain an episode in season one of the show called 'Romantic Expressionism', in which Jeff and Britta try and break-up Annie and Vaughn - nobody can identify who ate the macaroni except Leonard, who somehow knows it was Jeff.

It would also explain why Jeff hates Leonard so much. Since Jeff is shown to love himself more than anything through large parts of the series. However, it's more in the same way that Rick Sanchez loves himself, in that he really hates himself and everything in public is just superficial.

Why Abed sent Jeff back from the future is a little murkier, though it could be because their experiences at Greendale lead them to a future that they need to avoid. It has been established that they created multiple timelines during their time at Greendale, so perhaps the timeline needed to be corrected.

Therefore, Jeff is sent back to stop something from happening, this would explain why Leonard is at Greendale in the first place and why he seems to mock Pierce, because this is something Jeff would do.
