10 Most Intriguing Characters From The Last Kingdom

8. Ragnar The Younger

The Last Kingdom
BBC

The hulking figure of the mighty Danish warlord, Ragnar Ragnarsson, struck terror into those who crossed his colossal path. The adoptive brother of Uhtred built up a fearsome reputation during his escapades in Ireland, where he plundered churches and raided villages across the land. After the death of his father, Earl Ragnar the Fearless, at the hands of Kjartan the Cruel, Ragnar returned to seek vengeance against those who betrayed his family. Together, Ragnar and Uhtred were able to take revenge on Kjartan and restore honour to their father’s name.

Tobias Santelmann creates a character which simultaneously exudes a touching tenderness to those he loves, while also radiating a rage and fury towards his enemies when protecting the people he treasures most. Santelmann brings sincere compassion to the role of Ragnar, which elevates the character beyond most of his Danish associates to form one of the most multidimensional characters in The Last Kingdom, as the Dane balances his own ambitions with his responsibility towards his family when they’re in need.

Ragnar eventually aligned himself with his cousin Cnut, but the envious and resentful Dane had grown jealous of Ragnar’s relationship with Brida. His eventual demise came at the hands of Æthelwold, who had been goaded into his murder by Cnut, cast him into the icy realm of Niflheim. However, Uhtred and Brida were able to take revenge against Æthelwold to save Ragnar’s soul, allowing him to pass into the halls of Valhalla.
