10 Most Intriguing Characters From The Last Kingdom

4. Finan

The Last Kingdom
BBC

The Irish warrior, Finan, has been Uhtred’s loyal companion from the moment that they were liberated from slavery together. The duo met aboard the ship of the slaver, Sverri, and their bond drove each other on to survive for long enough to once again taste freedom following their rescue by Ragnar, Hild and Steapa. Finan’s admiration and respect for Uhtred saw them join forces, and the Irishman has since saved him from a plethora of sticky situations.

Along with Sihtric and Osferth, Finan has become one of Uhtred’s closest allies – he has supported him through thick-and-thin, defended him on the battlefield, and has driven Uhtred on during his quest to reclaim Bebbanburg. Uhtred has been abandoned, betrayed, and let down on multiple occasions throughout his journey, so the introduction of Finan as a steadfast and unwavering ally makes him a welcome addition to the show. Mark Rowley's fun and frantic depiction of Finan brings a lively energy to The Last Kingdom, providing great comic relief when things are most serious.

While he is best known for his wise-cracking jokes, Finan also offers comfort to Uhtred in times of need. After the death of Beocca, Finan provides solace and consolation during one of Uhtred’s darkest moments. He also helped to find common ground between Uhtred and his son, Young Uhtred, whose estranged relationship had left the pair unable to understand or sympathise with one another.
