There's a lot of great musical moments in Sense8, like when Sun Bak kicks !*$% through a Seoul brothel whilst Lykke Li plays. There's also a lot of weird musical moments, like when a Macy Gray song is used in the year of our lord 2015. Our when the Sensates bond over a karaoke version of the 1993 hit single What's Up?.
Which, admittedly, is a pretty famous song. If you were alive at the time, anyway. Which, given the age of some of the show's characters, would make sense. Every one of them appears to recognise it when their connected senses allow them to be listening at the same time, but some will probably know it for another reason.
The version by German eurodance group Minnesota is used in the YouTube video HEYYEYAAEYAAAEYAEYAA, which has over 55 million views and involves clips from old cartoon He-Man lip-syncing to the song. With that in mind, it's rather ludicrous that the big emotional bonding moment for the group is to a goofy tune used in an internet meme.
