10 Most Messed Up Steven Universe Moments

8. Bismuth Attacks Steven

Steven's mother, Rose Quartz has been a mysterious figure throughout the Steven Universe series.

The only crumbs of information came from the Crystal Gems, Steven's dad, and the occasional VHS tape. But as fans learned more and more about the former leader of the Crystal Gems, things started to get fuzzy.

The revolutionary savior of Gems longing to be free of Homeworld's control began to show cracks late in season 1 and even more in season 2. It wasn't really until the episode "Bismuth" we learned another side to Rose.

Bismuth used to be a member of the Crystal Gems, but after a disagreement with Rose Quartz about whether or not they should shatter Homeworld Gems, Rose poofed Bismuth and hid her away from the other Crystal Gems. This showed Rose wasn't against punishing those close to her, but also never truly wanted to shatter Homeworld Gems. A sentiment not shared by her enemies.

When Steven shows the same reservedness at using a weapon meant to shatter Gems, Bismuth accuses him of actually being Rose in disguise and attacks Steven. Steven manages to beat Bismuth, stabbing her with his mother's sword. He tells Bismuth he will tell the Crystal Gems the truth about why she disappeared, giving her a small piece of peace before she poofs and Steven takes her back to the Crystal Temple, keeping his promise to her.

Steven is learning more and more about his mother, struggling to understand her choices, but also forge his own path as Steven. Bismuth isn't the first Gem to believe he's actually Rose Quartz, but she was the first to attack him without regard to his human half.
