If Arrow could be summarized in two words, it would be “poor Oliver.” How many times must he watch someone he loves die? Not only that, but be forced to chose who lives and who dies. The fact that he’s had to do it twice in his life speaks to how tragic his adult life has been.

Earlier in Season Two, during a flashback sequence, we see a flashback of Ivo making Oliver choose between Shado and Sara. When Ivo points the gun at Sara, Oliver jumps in front of her to save her. This leads to Ivo shooting Shado, the person who Slade loved.

In one of the most anxiety fuelled scenes in the Arrowverse, Slade recreates that night, but with Oliver’s mother and sister instead. Moira stands up to Slade in an act of defiance, offering her life so both her children may live. At first, Slade acknowledges her bravery, apologizes, and is about to leave. However, he then turns around and stabs Moira through the heart with a sword.

Moira’s whole character arc is that she has done everything to keep her children safe. Even going as far aiding Malcolm Merlyn in killing her husband and 503 people in the Undertaking. Her sacrifice was the ultimate redemption for her, but a very tragic scene for the audience.
