10 Most Paused TV Moments

9. "How's Annie?" - Twin Peaks

Starbucks Game Of Thrones
ABC

Picking just one must-pause moment from David Lynch's mesmerising Twin Peaks is extremely difficult, but more than Josie (Joan Chen) getting trapped inside a table knob or that glorious nuclear explosion in the recent revival, there's one definingly weird moment - the end of season two.

Production on the show's second season was a nightmare for Lynch, who was pressured by ABC to reveal the identity of Laura Palmer's (Sheryl Lee) killer earlier than he intended to, after which viewership began to sharply decline.

In an attempt to avoid Twin Peaks' cancellation, co-creator Mark Frost came up with the idea for an end-of-season cliffhanger in which Agent Cooper (MacLachlan) became possessed by the interdimensional entity known as Bob (Frank Silva).

Indeed, season two ended with Coop smashing his head on his hotel room's mirror, revealing a duality with Bob as he maniacally asks over and over again, "How's Annie?"

The ending mystified and infuriated fans, especially after the show's cancellation was announced, but anyone who recorded the episode to VHS no doubt wore out their cassette by freeze-framing that haunting shot of Bob's face reflected in the broken mirror.
