8. American Horror Story

Working in a similar way to The Twilight Zone, American Horror Story is an anthology series with a key difference; rather than each episode being a new story, the story is stretched over one season. Many actors return each season but always in different roles and with the show shifting tones to explore different kinds of horror as well as different time periods and different genres.

This gives audiences the freedom of choice, if one season isn’t to your liking, you can always check out next season as it might be more your thing. This is something that a continuing narrative series wouldn’t allow.

The show isn’t afraid to take chances or push controversy whether it’s the breast-feeding serial killer in Asylum, the highly political Cult or taking on a strange meta-format for Roanoke. Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk have put together a creative show that isn’t afraid to reinvent itself year after year and, as such, draw back viewers over and over.
