7. True Blood

Southern Gothic with plenty of blood and sex. True Blood, based on the novel by Charlaine Harris, is like somebody took the Vampire/Human romance angles of Twilight but gave the vampires their balls back. The vampires of True Blood are vicious, wicked and supremely cool.

Set in an alternate world where Japanese scientists have created a blood substitute named True Blood, vampires finally step out of the shadows and declare their existence to the rest of the world. Their revelation is met with everything from acceptance to denial to outright hatred; their struggle providing an effective metaphor for real life groups who have faced oppression throughout history and have struggled to be recognised as equals.

Though the first season is a little slow to get started, True Blood finds its beat in the second season and becomes a well crafted dark fairy tale. There is everything you could possibly want in this show; sex, romance, action, violence, horror and even a dash of politics. True Blood is a diehard show amongst its fans and provides great opportunities for a re-watch.
