Blue Exorcist has a lot of demons roaming around the world. From corrupt priests to the dark pestilences hiding in the shadows of modern underpasses, evil is everywhere. But the unexpected face of evil comes from a character that no one saw turning on all of his friends.

The world of Blue Exorcist has its own version of the ever-illusive organisation known as the Illuminati. The organisation is led by Lucifer himself, and has been a real issue for the main heroes of the show in the second season. This is mostly due to the fact that so many people thought to be allies and close friends have been revealed to be traitorous spies, including the unassuming Renzo Shima.

Renzo Shima started out as a generic enough side character. He was a womaniser and comedic character who has a hilarious fear of bugs. But then the Kyoto arc began and slowly more and more people were revealed to be members or spies for the Illuminati, including Renzo.

Renzo reveals that he has been a spy since the very beginning. He had only gone to the academy, where exorcists train, to capture Kamiki Izumo; an exorcist who has tremendous summoning powers and the ability to create something called "the perfect elixir."

Renzo's betrayal shocked not only fans, but also many of the main characters of the show, who viewed Renzo as someone they could trust and rely on for seemingly anything.
