Nowadays, the betrayal of Sasuke Uchiha in the hit series Naruto is almost made fun of as a trope. But, when fans were children and watched Naruto for the first time Sasuke's betrayal was definitely a shock.

Sasuke was one of the only surviving members of his powerful clan known as the Uchihas and was a very edgy child following the death of his family. His main goal in the early episodes of Naruto was solely to find his brother and kill him for slaughtering Sasuke's entire clan as well as his parents.

But over time fans could see that Sasuke wasn't really ready to be a killer and there was hope he and Naruto could be best friends. Then Sasuke ran into Orochimaru, one of the biggest Villians in Naruto, who slowly corrupted Sasuke with curses and promises of power to destroy Sasuke's brother.

Eventually, Sasuke did the unthinkable and joined up with Orochimaru, cutting off all his ties to the Leaf village and his teammates and close friends and leaving many a young viewer shocked at Sasuke's betrayal of everything good he had left in his life.

Sasuke would then be a primary antagonist for the remainder of Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden, constantly battling against his closest friends, determined to achieve the vengeance he so badly desired.
