It's official: True Detective have been reading extensively from the Game Of Thrones playbook, offing a main character shockingly early in the season. Or have they? Towards the end of Episode 2, Ray searches a mysterious second home of Caspere's, an address provided to him by Frank. He sees a pool of blood on the floor and decides to investigate further... but is shockingly ambushed by a masked figure - the same crow's mask seen on the passenger's seat of the killer's car in Episode 1. Ray takes a shotgun blast to the stomach and collapses, allowing the killer to stalk over and fire a secondary blow from point blanc range. Ray should surely be dead, but several arguments suggest that this is merely a bait-and-switch. Several promo shots released before the premiere showed Ray in surroundings (and outfits) he hasn't yet appeared in - although this could merely be an elaborate ruse. There's also the possibility that the shotgun contained some sort of non-lethal ammunition, the assault merely acting as a painful warning to cease investigations. Either way, the ending of Episode 2 was the biggest cliff-hanger of True Detective's entire run so far (including Season 1). Episode 3 can't come quickly enough.
