2. Paul Has A Very Shady Military (And Family) Background

Of all four main characters, Paul is easily the least invested in the Caspere murder. His discovering of the body has tied him inextricably to the investigation, something he wishes to be free of as soon as possible. This doesn't render him an uncomplicated figure though; like everyone else in True Detective, Paul has a number of skeletons in his closet. His girlfriend discovers that he was previously a part of 'Black Mountain Security', a controversial military unit linked with unspoken (but presumably terrible) allegations. Paul lapses into his default reaction when accused of anything, angrily blaming the other person and storming out. He also visits his mother, another incredibly creepy character. Whether simply signals of a mother's protective nature, or something altogether more sinister, her slow rubbing of Paul's back and cooing over his popularity with women paint her in an incredibly strange light.
