10 Most Shocking TV Episode Endings
6. Twin Peaks - Lonely Souls
By this point in Twin Peaks' run, there was such a huge cast of characters and so many mysteries going on, that it was easy to lose track of the mystery that started it all: who killed Laura Palmer? And seven episodes into the second season, the killer was revealed, in what had to be one of the most horrifying murder scenes on television. It disturbed audiences in 1990, and it's still disturbing today.
Despite being a widely praised episode, the reveal may have been the thing that killed the show. The ratings, which had briefly rebounded on this episode's airing, continued to plummet once Laura's murder was resolved, and the quality of the show itself started to suffer.
Things got a little too weird, even for Twin Peaks, and the back half of the second season felt disjointed and aimless, only returning to form near the very end.
