Every episode of Breaking Bad was essentially just an hour-long anxiety attack, with some much-needed black comedy to occasionally lighten the mood. But things rarely got bleaker than that penultimate episode of season 2, where Jane starts choking on her own vomit with Walt in the room. Walt was going down a dark path, but it wasn't clear just how low he was willing to go to get his way, until he simply stands there as Jane chokes to death.

It's understandable, in a messed up way: Jane was an untrustworthy junkie and a bad influence on Jesse. Eventually, their money and drugs would run out, and there was no telling what Jane would do when that happened.

So, Walt decides to kill two birds with one stone, letting a potential threat die and giving Jesse a huge wake-up call in the process. It's cold and calculating, and the first real sign of just how evil Walt could be.
