10 Most Surprising Moments In Netflix’s Sunderland ‘Til I Die Documentary
7. Grayson Sacked
Had you followed Sunderland at all last season, this specific moment wouldn’t have been all that surprising. In fact, given that Simon Grayson is the shortest serving manager in the club’s history, it might have been more surprising to see him at all.
As Chris Coleman was the focal point as manager and never shirked his press duties, many fans might have forgotten Grayson’s brief tenure even happened. So when the series shows Grayson full of positivity and optimism for the coming season, there’s a huge slice of dramatic irony for the viewers. Not only do we know this is going to be a terrible season, we know Grayson won’t even oversee most of it.
It’s the way in which he’s sacked that feels so surprising. After getting used to the almost unbridled access the documentary crew is granted, we’re on the outside looking in. Out in the media room with reporters from the likes of Sun FM waiting for the post-match interviews, the press officer comes out and reads a brief, cold statement that Grayson has been let go.
That’s all there is. We never hear from Grayson again, or hear any players talk about it.
