The forgotten man at Sunderland, Jack Rodwell actually pops up in a blink and you’ll miss it appearance before his saga really begins.

As the documentary explains, Rodwell was a rising star stagnating at Man City before his big money move to Sunderland. His reputation and ability commanded a huge £70k a week wage, one which did not come with a reduction clause following relegation. While that may seem like poor planning, you can’t help but feel sorry for the club when you see all the stories inside it.

So when Rodwell is seen watching Sunderland v Fulham, you have to remind yourself a player of his talent is still at the club. And when the transfer window opens, getting him off the books feels like do or die.

Rodwell’s explosive press interview trying to engineer a move away is followed by a meeting with Chief Executive Martin Bain. Considering how the press hyped up these stories, it’s surprising dull. Or anti climactic, at least, to see Rodwell in his shorts and sandals as he declines the chance to save the club £70k a week. He just seems to shake his head, walk out, and that’s the end of it.
