Deadline day drama means Jim White’s yellow tie, overinflated prices and (in years gone by) Harry Redknapp giving interviews through his car window. In Sunderland ‘Til I Die though, we see the real life moments behind the TV drama.

As well as Lewis Grabban, James Vaughan departs in January too, leaving the club with no recognised senior striker. A deal for Chris Martin struck three days prior falls through late on, but through some coaching connections they manage to lure Ashley Fletcher on loan.

However, that still leaves them a man short. It might have been very different had things gone their way in August. Suddenly, the Chief Exec gets a phone call from an agent. Ross McCormack is available and looking to talk to Sunderland. One of the Championship’s best players seems a bit out of their price range, when they’ve been leaning on free agents, loanees and the pick of the crop from League One.

So it proves, as there is a rare moment when Bain insists the cameras are shut off. When they’re back on, deadline day is over and McCormack is not on Sunderland’s books. You can sense the friction between Grayson and Bain, and Grayson is soon gone.
