2. It’s Literally ‘Til I Die
There’s just as much focus off the pitch as there is on it. However, there’s one episode opening that proves more than any of them that Sunderland the city revolves around Sunderland the football club.
Amongst the many fans interviewed are a pair of funeral directors. With wry smiles, they discuss fans being buried in red and white scarfs, ties, football tops... this is a city that bleeds football. There’s even been red and white caskets made so fans can be wrapped in their team’s colours for all eternity.
Considering some of the fans we see, it’s no surprise really. One man (shirtless, naturally) appears at almost every away game the documentary covers. Several times he speaks to the crew afterwards to bemoan the ‘shower of sh*te’ he’s just seen. He’s always back for the next match.
While the dedication of some of the players could have been questioned during last season’s ill fated relegation dogfight, the dedication of the fans could not. The fans often talk about how the players, manager and owners will all leave, but they’ll still be there. Some of them even take the club to the grave.
