Films and TV series never tire of suggesting what might have been behind the Whitechapel murders of the 1800s. Jack the Ripper is the name given to the individual however his (or her) real identity has never been factually uncovered.

Star Trek waded into this debate back in the 1960s with Wolf in the Fold and while the episode itself isn't a mind-bending psychotic episode, its conclusion does make a wonderfully bizarre twist. After possessing Mr Hengist, the entity that has been responsible for the murders on Argelius manages to transfer itself into the computer banks of the USS Enterprise.

For the next few minutes there's maniacal laughter, altered voices, and screams of "Redjac!" as the crew attempt to combat the deadly lifeform with its appearance on the computer being a series of swirling psychedelic gases.

The best way of course to stop its spread to another form is to dose the crew up on tranquilizers, with the crew truly all spaced out and chilled as they finally subdue the killer back in Hengist's body. It's one circular trip for Redjac and one groovy way to put a stop to multiple murders. McCoy's line as Hengist holds the knife once more sums it all up; "You're gonna hurt someone with that..."

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
