5. Chanterelle/Lily/Anne
One of the most intriguing characters to ever grace Buffy or Angel was Anne Steele, a woman first introduced in the show's second season episode Lie to Me as a vampire wannabee called Chanterelle.
A teen runaway constantly conflicted about her identity and place in the world, she returns to the series in the season three episode Anne when she encounters a missing Buffy and helps her fight the dangerous demon cult that killed her fiancé.
When she reappeared on Angel, she'd adopted the name Anne (Buffy's middle name and former alias) and had started a homeless shelter for runaway youths, and even turned up in the spin-off's finale.
Anne's development took years to achieve, but was nonetheless one of the most satisfying and underappreciated arcs of either show.
