10 Most Underrated SpongeBob SquarePants Episodes
4. 'Plankton's Pet' (Season Nine)
'Plankton's Pet' is the perfect commentary on the struggles of a pet owner, just told through the singular eye of an evil mastermind.
The plot revolves around Plankton adopting an amoeba, Spot, and the difficulties that nearly every new pet owner faces. Through a series of hilarious scenes, Plankton tries to teach Spot tricks, take him for walks, and even discipline him.
The disciplining is probably the best moment of the entire episode as Plankton is completely unable to punish Spot for more than a brief moment without feeling guilt. If you've ever owned a pet, you know that feeling all too well and SpongeBob SquarePants captured in right there.
This episode actually had such a great plot that Spot became a semi-recurring character in SpongeBob SquarePants' later seasons, appearing in three separate episodes after his debut. That's a rarity in a show that prides itself on its main characters inability to earn a driver's license over the course of two decades of episodes, and just goes to show why every SpongeBob fan needs to seek this one out.
