10 Most Underused Doctor Who Characters

7. Brian Williams

Doctor Who Ashad/The Lone Cyberman
BBC Studios

Brian Williams was a delightful addition to the Ponds' final act, first showing up in Dinosaurs On A Spaceship as an unwitting member of the Eleventh Doctor's gang.

Brain was so charming because of how completely and utterly human he was. He carried around a trowel (in case of digging emergencies) enjoyed packed lunches, and was as down-to-earth as they come. He was remarkably ordinary, reminding Amy and Rory of the wonderful, normal life they could still lead at home.

Brilliant though Brian was, we simply didn't get to see as much of him as we'd have liked. He was introduced so late in the game that it felt like he was only just getting going when his tenure was cut off, and even worse, his run wasn't even finished properly, with his final appearance - a short scene called P.S. - not even being filmed.

Plus, it's actually pretty weird that we don't learn anything about Rory's family until his final few episodes. We didn't even meet his parents at his wedding! It's unrealistic to say that Brian should've been introduced way back in Series 5, but it would've been nice to spend more time with him all the same.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
