10 Most Underused Doctor Who Characters

Though Dan Lewis is an entertaining character, it's starting to feel like Doctor Who has done everything it possibly can with contemporary human companions.

Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat concocted some really interesting arcs for companions like River, Donna, Martha, and Amy, but the Thirteenth Doctor's "fam" has been a complete and utter bust, with these characters doing little more than asking copious questions, and standing around with nothing to do.

In other words, it's time to switch things up in the companion department, which brings us to Kamelion. First introduced in the underrated Fifth Doctor serial The King's Demons, this odd robot sidekick was dropped a short while later, largely because the prop was so difficult to work with.

But with modern technology able to alleviate those production issues, a version of Kamelion could be brought back quite easily.

The idea of a shape-changing android opens up countless story possibilities, and furthermore, the dynamic itself would be inherently interesting. Think about the back-and-forths between the Eleventh Doctor and Handles in The Time Of The Doctor, with the Doctor's fizzing, bubbling mind clashing with that cold and calculated robot - almost in a Kirk/Spock sort of way.

It would feel totally fresh in this modern era, and again, we're eager to see a companion who isn't a contemporary human - so sign us up for a Kamelion comeback.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
