10 Nostalgic British Children's TV Classics

6. The Family Ness

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkdjqFAXMF0 Broadcast on BBC 1 between 1984-1985, The Family Ness is a classic cartoon which is much beloved to retro TV fans. It features the adventures of the MacTout family - Mr MacTout who likes to play his bagpipes and his children Elspeth and Angus. The children have 'thistle whistles' which when used, summons up different members of the Nessies - a family of Loch Ness monsters including Her High Ness - the queen of the monsters, Ferocious Ness is a large, scary looking monster who is secretly a big softie and Lovely Ness who is the only female monster. She has blonde hair but is too dainty to do much good. There was a big merchandising push with this cartoon - annuals, story books, figures and even a (unsuccessful) record. The children have stupid accents but the cartoon was mildly amusing and entertained many a tyke on lunchtime TV throughout the 1980s. But jut remember - you will never find a Nessie in the zoo...

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
