While we're waiting for Season 2 of this psychological thriller, it seems like as good a time as any to look at where Ryan Hardy's supposedly elite task force went wrong. Kevin Bacon stars as Hardy, the stereotypical burnt out detective who has alcohol issues and a fragile psyche, all very original stuff. Plus, he an't run too fast after being stabbed in the heart. The main members of his team are Shawn 'Iceman' Ashmore as Mike Weston, a young FBI Agent who wants nothing more than to impress Hardy and Annie Parisse as expert on cult behaviour, Debra Parker. Introductions out of the way, their goal is to find and apprehend Dr. Joe Carroll (James Purefoy) a dangerous serial murderer who is forming a cult of killers. Hardy wrote a book on Carroll after being the one to apprehend him the first time, so is brought into the investigation as a consultant. You would think that a team which seems to have all the bases covered wouldn't be too far behind the murderous author and his followers but you would be wrong. I'll buy into the fact that Carroll has been in prison a while and has had time to plan his state spanning revenge. What I can't accept is how gullible the FBI is in dealing with him. Lots of people die because of silly mistakes such as searching a woman but somehow missing the deadly eye stabbers in her hands or gathering people in a community center without checking anyone although a murder cult is at large. We're meant to buy into a big cat and mouse game but for the most part the cat hasn't even caught the mouse's scent. It becomes hard to watch when the show is so one sided you almost find yourself rooting for the villain.
