10 Oldest Characters In The Doctor Who Universe

8. The Master

Doctor Who Ashildr
BBC

Estimated Age: Over 2,000 years.

Insane, brilliant, and the Doctor's greatest frenemy, the Master has been a thorn in the Doctor's side for centuries, and their special connection dates all the way back to their school days, when the two of them studied at Gallifrey's Time Lord Academy.

The Master and the Doctor were schoolmates, study buddies, and they've been friends since their very first day at the Academy. This means that they grew up together, which also means that they were born around the exact same time as each other, putting the Master's age in the same ballpark as the Doctor's - assuming that we track their ages relative to Gallifrey.

Other Time Lords who are also around the same age as the Doctor and the Master include the Rani (who, in Time And The Rani, is said to be the exact same age as the Doctor) and Romana (who is slightly younger than the Doctor).

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
