Why She Was Hated

We were always supposed to see Janice through everyone else's eyes, rather than through Chandler's. She was part of a punch-line about his hilariously bad life choices and the fact that he couldn't see how grating she was was entirely the point. If you liked her at this point, you weren't paying attention properly.

Then, for a while, when she turned up again, it was as a personification of someone making a mistake. She was, essentially, a female Paolo without the slightly nastier elements.

But Then...

Gradually, Janice became way more sympathetic. Perhaps because she endured Ross at his worst and even despite the fact that she broke Chandler's heart, Janice just ended up being vastly more likeable. Even when she's used to make Rachel's labour with Emily a little more nightmarish, she'd already got so over with the audience that it was funny rather than annoying.

Janice was mostly a good person (cheating in this universe of AWFUL, loveable people was a misdemeanour at best) and over time, we came to realise she deserved way better.
