Hosted: December 15, 1984 Now, technically, Eddie Murphy has hosted twice. His first time was in December of 1982, when he filled in for the scheduled host ( and his co-star in the movie 48 Hours) Nick Nolte. At the time, Murphy was still a cast member of Saturday Night Live, and is still the only cast member to serve as host simultaneously, a fact that caused a good amount of strain with his co-stars. When Murphy returned to host in 1984- which included the infamous "White Like Me" mokumentary sketch- he made it very clear in his monologue that he was only there to help advertise his upcoming release Beverly Hills Cop. Murphy insinuated that he would never be back, and- thirty years later- he has held true to those words. Since his appearance in 1984, Murphy hasn't returned for any reason: he has not taken part in any of the the anniversary shows; he has not been interviewed for any of the documentaries; and he was one of the only living former-cast members (the other being Dennis Miller) who did not participate in the book Live From New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live. And why? Part of it is from respect Murphy feels is lacking from him almost single-handily saving Saturday Night Live in the early-80s from cancellation. The other reason: a random throwaway joke by David Spade in the early 90s (over a picture of Eddie Murphy: "Look kids, a falling star.") that Murphy has apparently never gotten over. Arguably, Eddie Murphy is the greatest, most successful star to ever emerge from Saturday Night Live. It is a shame that he has not returned, when even Tony Danza and David Alan Grier (no disrespect intended) have hosted twice. At this point, the only logical hosting points for Buckwheat/Mister Robinson/and Gumby ("Dammit!") are: the Season Finale of Season 40, Season 50, or whenever the Series Finale happens to ultimately occur.
