Cuddly Harold Bishop has been a recurring character on Aussie soap Neighbours for nearly twenty years now, but in 1991 it didn’t look like he’d be sticking around so long.

He Was Dead...: Harold and his wife Madge went on a holiday break together, and decided to take a relaxing stroll along a coastal path. Madge gets distracted chatting with a stranger at the cliffs and when she looks around Harold is nowhere to be seen.

She later finds his trademark glasses near a cliff-edge and yells out his name at the sea. He is presumed drowned, but the body is never recovered.

...But He Got Better: Harold showed up again in 1996 as a Salvation Army worker named Ted. We learn that after he fell into the sea he was rescued by a trawler, and that he suffered complete amnesia from his accident. He and Madge are reunited and through counselling his memory starts to return.

A happy-ish ending then, until Madge was diagnosed with cancer and died a short time later. She did come back as a ghost, but that's a whole other story.
