Now, hear me out.

Spirit Folk is never going to feature at the top of any Irish person’s list of Star Trek episodes, and it does skew a little too close to caricature than this writer would like, but in a general sense - what’s the harm? It is a million miles better than Up The Long Ladder, though never touches anything like the Irish representation over on Deep Space Nine

Perhaps the best we could say about the episode overall is that it's largely inoffensive, and well-intentioned. The final scene is actually very true to how this writer imagines his Irish compatriots reacting to discovering the crew of Voyager. That is to say, once they’re given the full picture, it’s more or less business as usual.

Seamus is back to trying to grab a cheeky bit of coin from Tom, though now will full knowledge that Tommy Boy might have alien tech to help. Maggie O'Halloran forgives Harry for the joke they pulled, which is a little less realistic - there’s a good chance Harry should be walking out of there with a black eye. But Michael O’Sullivan welcomes Janeway, just as he had before, now armed with the knowledge that she may fly away and slightly further at any time. Everyone is still welcome, the music is still playing, and the dodgy accents aside, it’s not a bad depiction of how the Irish take things in their stride.

Now if they could just fix the bloody sign over the door…
