10 Plot Holes You Haven't Noticed In Stranger Things

2. Friends Don't Lie

Eleven and Mike's relationship has, without a doubt, been one of the high points of the whole series but the pair have never been more adorable than they were in Season 1, as the former taught his telekinetic friend about the norms of childhood. And perhaps the most important lesson he ever taught her was what it means to be a friend.

Way back in the second ever episode, 'The Weirdo On Maple Street', Eleven seemed confused by the term "friend", literally going as far as to directly ask him: "What is friend?". Mike responded by breaking down the notion of friendship for her - a conversation that paved the way for the now iconic "friends don't lie".

However, if you watch the season back, you'll notice that this wasn't the first time that El had heard the term.

During a flashback in Episode 6, 'The Monster', the young girl was frightened by all of the people surrounding her in the lab and, in an attempt to soothe her fears, Dr. Brenner told that they were "all friends". Furthermore, at the beginning of Episode 2, Mike told her that he used his walkie to chat with his friends.

As El never responded to either of these prior statements with confusion, it seemed like she had already grasped the notion of what friends meant, so why then did she suddenly question Mike over the term in his basement?
